As the Principles and Norms for the Liturgy of the Hours clearly point out, in the liturgy the Church expresses not only praise to God, but “the wishes and desires of all Christians, indeed she beseeches Christ, and, through him, the Father, for the salvation of the whole world” (n. 17). Such a prayer of intercession is not only of the Church, “but also of Christ, since the prayers are made in the name of Christ, that is, “through our Lord Jesus Christ,” and thus the Church continues to make those prayers and supplications which Christ offered in the days of his earthly life, and which therefore enjoy a particular efficacy.”
Every liturgical action is a prayer of intercession, since it is a prayer that “conforms us closely to the prayer of Jesus” (CCC 2634), the only intercessor with the Father. Indeed, “Jesus, by his incarnation and death on the cross, accomplished radical intercession; he placed himself between God and man, and now continues to intercede for us as a merciful high priest” (CCC 2633).
In the Liturgy the Church participates in the intercession of Christ. Naturally, in the various liturgical actions, we find places where the dimension of intercession becomes more explicit: universal prayer, intercessions at Vespers, intercessions in the Eucharistic Prayer
